The HazChem code is the code used to the fire services of the hazardous content in a vehicle allowing them to effectively deal with
transportation incidents. These codes must be displayed on tank wagons, road tankers and tank containers transporting dangerous goods by
the appropriate road and rail regulations which stipulate vehicular requirements for the carriage of dangerous goods.
How a HazChem panel is made up
The first number of the code tells the fire brigade what firefighting equipment suitable for these dangerous goods.
1 A course spray: water jets2 A fine water spray or fog spray
3 A foam spray
4 A Dry agent spray i.e. water must not be used with the dangerous goods at risk.
The second letter of the code tells the fire brigade what precautions to take in the event of a fire. It also lets them know if a violent reaction may happen and whether to dilute or try and contain any spill.
P There is a danger of violent reaction or explosion and the spillage should be diluted a large quantity of water down the nearest drain. The Firemen should be wearing full protective clothing.
R There is a NO danger of violent reaction or explosion and the spillage should be diluted. The Firemen should be wearing breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.
S There is a danger of violent reaction or explosion and the spillage should be diluted. The Firemen should be wearing breathing apparatus only if there is a fire and full protective clothing including gloves should be worn.
S There is a danger of violent reaction or explosion and the spillage should be diluted. The Firemen should be wearing breathing apparatus and full protective clothing including gloves.
T There is NO danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus must be worn and the spillage must be diluted.
T There is NO danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus (for fire only) must be worn and the spillage must be diluted.
W There is a danger of violent reaction or explosion; full protective clothing must be worn and the spillage must be contained.
X There is NO danger of violent reaction or explosion; full protective clothing must be worn and the spillage must be contained.
Y There is a danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus must be worn and the spillage must be contained.
Y There ia a danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus (for fire only) must be worn and the spillage must be contained.
Z There is NO danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus must be worn and the spillage must be contained.
Z There is NO danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus (for fire only) must be worn and the spillage must be contained.
The third letter will either not be there or it will be an E
Which indicates that a safety hazard for the public exists and the evacuation of people from the area of the accident must be considered.
The Hazard Identification Number (HIN) / (EAC) Code
The hazard identification number consists of two or three figures. In general the figures indicate the following hazards:
NOTE: Doubling of a figure indicates intensification of that particular hazard. If the HIN is prefixed with an "X" this indicates the substance will react dangerously with water. For such substances, water may only be used by approval of experts. Where the hazard associated with a substance can be adequately indicated by a single figure, this is followed by a zero.
The following combinations have special meanings - refer to Hazchem List or control:
